Jameson Lopp, co-fondatore e CTO di Casa, una società di custodia di crittografia, ha rilasciato un rapporto sui risultati di un test sulla performance della firma hardware multifirma Bitcoin sul blog di Casa il 13 settembre.

Il risultato mostra che i dispositivi hardware per portafogli criptati sono in grado di gestire bene piccole e semplici transazioni. Tuttavia, hanno difficoltà ad eseguire una volta che la transazione diventa complicata. Si dice che Casa sia costruita su dispositivi hardware dedicati multisig e multifirma distribuiti geograficamente per proteggere le chiavi, l’esperienza utente progettata e i servizi per i clienti.

Lopp ha sottolineato che mentre l’azienda non ha alcun controllo sui dispositivi hardware, l’obiettivo è quello di supportare qualsiasi dispositivo alla fine della giornata. Così, ha deciso di condurre una ricerca e sperava di trarre alcune conclusioni e di aiutare i fornitori di software multisig a comprendere meglio i limiti dell’hardware e a personalizzare il software del portafoglio per ottenere migliori prestazioni.

Casa è attualmente compatibile con sei hardware tra cui Trezor, Ledger, Coinkite e Coldcard Il test è stato fatto su tutti i dispositivi hardware supportati e anche BitBox.

Lopp ha impostato il test sfruttando l’appimage 4.0.2 di Electrum su Debian Linux e ha creato una varietà di portafogli multisig P2WSH (segwit nativo) che utilizzano il testnet Bitcoin Evolution e con i dispositivi hardware collegati via USB. In ogni portafoglio c’era un deposito di 100 UTXO.

Lopp ha creato una serie di test per determinare queste capacità del portafoglio hardware quando si firmano transazioni multisig di varia complessità. Ha ripetuto questi test e ha concluso che è meglio e più sicuro se i dispositivi hardware possono mostrare indicatori di progresso per il caricamento e la firma.

Ha aggiunto questo:

„Sono giunto alla conclusione che non mi piacciono molto i dispositivi hardware che non mostrano indicatori di progresso per il caricamento e la firma. Per questo motivo, preferisco molto di più Coldcard e Trezor in questo senso. BitBox e Ledger sono ansiosi perché non si ha idea se sta succedendo qualcosa“.

Quando si tratta di superare la limitazione delle dimensioni delle transazioni e il ritardo del tempo di elaborazione delle transazioni, Lopp ha suggerito che i portafogli hardware potrebbero tentare di suddividere un invio in più transazioni più piccole che sono al di sotto dei suoi limiti.

Quando il processo di transazione richiede troppo tempo, alcuni dispositivi si bloccheranno dall’inattività. Lopp suggerisce che il minimo che i produttori di dispositivi potrebbero fare per evitare tale inconveniente è disabilitare il timeout di blocco dello schermo mentre il dispositivo sta ancora lavorando sulla transazione.

Secondo Lopp, i dispositivi hardware dovrebbero anche supportare transazioni Bitcoin parzialmente firmate (PSBT) e tutte le possibili transazioni multisig valide. Ha aggiunto questo:

„Credo sia giunto il momento che i produttori di hardware comincino ad agire come fornitori di piattaforme e si assicurino di fornire piattaforme robuste che possano essere utilizzate per costruire un’ampia varietà di soluzioni“.

Ci sono due fasi da seguire per i dispositivi hardware quando si firma una transazione Bitcoin, secondo Lopp:

„In primo luogo, la transazione viene caricata sul dispositivo, analizza i dettagli e li visualizza sullo schermo per la conferma dell’utente. Questi dettagli sono generalmente l’indirizzo (o gli indirizzi) a cui vengono inviati i fondi, l’importo (o gli importi) che vengono inviati e la tassa che viene pagata. Quindi, alla conferma dell’utente, il dispositivo firma ogni transazione inserita e poi restituisce la transazione firmata al software del portafoglio“.
